Signature Water Features

The details people remember.

A pool is water; a great pool is an experience. The warmth of a raised spa, the hush of a sheet-fall, the glow of a grotto at night — these are the moments your family will gather around for years. They are also what separates a custom J. Oliver pool from a builder-grade rectangle.

We design each feature for its sound, its movement, and its light, then engineer the flow and plumbing so it runs quietly, efficiently, and exactly the way you imagined. Whether you are building a new pool or adding to one you already love, the right feature transforms how the whole backyard feels.

Water features are as much about engineering as aesthetics. The sound of a spillway depends on its flow rate, drop height, and weir style; the look of a sheet-fall depends on the precision of the lip it pours from; a spa that spills cleanly into the pool depends on careful elevation and plumbing. Get those details right and the feature feels effortless. Get them wrong and you end up with a noisy pump, an uneven sheet, or a spillway that splashes the deck. This is exactly the kind of detail work where an experienced custom builder earns its keep.

Every feature we build is tied into smart automation from partners like Pentair and Jandy, so you can heat the spa, start the waterfall, and set the lighting from your phone — and run each feature only when you want it, keeping operating costs low.

Choosing Your Features

The features that define a custom pool.

Most signature backyards combine two or three of these. Here is how we think about each one — what it adds, how it sounds, and where it works best.

Raised spas

An elevated spa that spills into the pool adds warmth, a focal point, and year-round use. Clad in glass mosaic or stone, it becomes the visual anchor of the whole backyard — and the spot the family gathers on cool evenings.

Spillways, sheet-falls & scuppers

Smooth ribbons or arcing spouts of water that carry sound across the patio and catch the light. We tune flow, drop height, and weir style so the effect is exactly as loud, soft, modern, or playful as you want.

Grottos & rock waterfalls

Hand-built natural rock waterfalls and grottos — often with hidden seating or a built-in slide — turn a pool into a destination. Each one is sculpted on site and engineered into the structure for durability.

Bubblers, deck jets & laminar jets

Bubblers on a tanning ledge or Baja shelf for kids, arcing deck jets, and crystal-clear laminar jets that glow with LED light after dark. Small touches that make the backyard unforgettable.

Lighting, automation & heating

Color LED pool lighting, smart pool automation, and efficient pool heating tie every feature together — so you can warm the spa, start a waterfall, and set the scene from your phone.

What Features Cost

From a single feature to a full showpiece.

Features can be added to a new build or an existing pool, and pricing depends on scope and plumbing. These ranges give you a realistic starting point; every project is quoted line by line. Ask about financing options.

Single Feature
$3K–$10K

A focused addition such as bubblers, deck jets, a scupper, or a fire bowl — high impact, integrated cleanly into a new or existing pool.

Signature Spa
$15K–$30K

A raised, integrated spa with spillways, mosaic tile, lighting, and automation — the most popular feature upgrade and a year-round focal point.

Showpiece
$30K+

A hand-built grotto, rock waterfall with slide, or multi-feature water-and-fire composition designed as the centerpiece of the backyard.

Ranges depend on the feature, materials, and whether it is built into a new pool or added to an existing one. We provide a clear, line-item proposal before any work begins.

Water Feature FAQ

Spas & features, answered.

Can you add a spa or water feature to my existing pool?+

Yes. We add raised spas, spillways, bubblers, and waterfalls to existing pools, integrating the plumbing, equipment, and automation so it looks and runs like it was always there. It is one of the most popular additions during a renovation.

Are spa heating and water features expensive to run?+

We use high-efficiency heaters and variable-speed pumps, and tie everything into smart automation so you only run features when you want them. We size equipment for low operating cost, and a well-designed system costs far less to run than an older single-speed setup.

Can the waterfall or spillway be made quieter or louder?+

Absolutely. The sound of moving water is part of the design — we tune flow rates, drop heights, and weir styles to get exactly the sound you want, from a soft trickle that masks street noise to a full, immersive waterfall.

Can I control the spa and features from my phone?+

Yes. Smart automation from Pentair and Jandy lets you heat the spa, start the waterfall, and set the lighting from your phone before you ever walk outside, then shut it all down with one tap.

How long does it take to heat a custom spa?+

With a properly sized high-efficiency gas heater, most spas reach temperature in 30 to 45 minutes. Because automation lets you start heating remotely, the spa is ready by the time you walk out the door.

What is the difference between a sheer descent and a scupper?+

A sheer descent (or sheet-fall) pours a smooth, wide ribbon of water from a hidden lip, giving a clean, modern look and a soft hush. A scupper is a spout — often from a raised wall or spa — that creates a more defined arc and a louder, more playful sound. We help you choose based on the look and sound you want.

Can you build a grotto with a slide?+

Yes. Natural rock grottos with built-in slides, hidden seating, and waterfalls are a favorite for family backyards. They are hand-built on site and engineered into the pool structure for durability and safety.

Do you offer financing for adding features?+

Yes. Features can be included in financing for a new build or a renovation so you can add the spa or waterfall now and spread the cost over time. Visit our financing page or ask during your consultation.
